Col. Louis A.K. Sylvester, BS '63

Colonel (Ret) Louis A. K. Sylvester is a 1958 graduate of Central High School in Mobile, Alabama. In 1963 he earned a BS in Education from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, and in 1973 an MS in Education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama: After a year of teaching in Minneapolis, Minnesota (1963-1964) he spent the next 27 plus years on active duty as an infantry officer in the United States Army. 

He is a graduate of the US Army's Infantry Officer's Basic and Advanced Courses, the Airborne Course (Parachute), the US Navy's Amphibious Warfare Course, and the Army's prestigious Command and General Staff College. His decorations include 2 Bronze Star Medals with "V" device for heroism in combat operations against enemy forces in South Vietnam, 2 Bronze Star Medals for service in the same armed conflict, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was also awarded the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star by the government of South Vietnam. Other decorations include 3 awards of the highly prestigious Legion Of Merit, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, 1 Army Achievement Medal, Parachutist Badge, and several theater and service medals. 

During his distinguished career he held command and staff positions at all levels of the Army. Highlights of his career includes service in armed conflict as an Infantry Battalion staff officer and Headquarters Company Commander in South Vietnam, 1966-1967, and as an Advisor to a Vietnamese Infantry Battalion, 1968-1969, he served as a training brigade Operations Officer at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, 1975-1976, a Company and Battalion Tactical Officer at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, 1977-1980, an Operations Officer at 7** Army Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany, 1980-1984, the Professor of Military Science at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, 1984-1986, and as a Cadet Command Brigade Commander at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, 1986-1989. After serving as President of the Physical Evaluation Board at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, 1989-1991, Colonel Sylvester retired from active federal service. 

For the next 13 years he was employed by the Richmond County Georgia School System as a mathematics teacher and Guidance Counselor at Sego Middle School (Augusta, GA) where in the year 2000 he earned Teacher of the Year Honors. He retired in 2004, but worked part time at Sego for one more year as a math teacher in an afterschool program. After one year of full retirement he reentered the workforce in Columbia County, GA as a guidance counselor at Greenbrier High School (Evans, GA), July 2006 until his third retirement in June of 2018. This third retirement completed his 54 years of work and service to the nation. 

He and his wife Vivian, a retired elementary school principal, have three sons, one daughter, three-daughters in law, one-son in law, and ten grandchildren.
