Belize City, Belize

Welcome to the Belize City group page!

During our week in Belize City, Belize, our group will partner with the non-profit organization Hand in Hand Ministries, which seeks to relieve people in  poverty by providing educational opportunities and housing construction. While we are in Belize City, we will have the mission of completing a 16X16 foot house from start to finish, finalizing the service with a beautiful blessing  of the house. Arriving at the work site, we will begin with nothing more  than a pile of dirt, but by the time we depart from Belize, there will be a home for a family. As we work on the house with the family we will have the privilege of hearing their story and the hope they have for their future. We will paint, hammer, and witness the progress of the house day by day. However, our main focus while in Belize is to meet and get to know the people of Belize, building relationships with the family and learning about the Belize culture, hardships, and lifestyle. In February 2017, Spring Hill College will build our fourteenth house in Belize City with Hand in Hand as we continue to serve there every year, including the first ever alumni trip to Belize City this past summer.

Hand in Hand Ministries also provides an outreach center and daycare for children whose parents and families have been affected by HIV/AIDS. While in Belize City, our group will spend time learning of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Belize. We will also learn how Hand in Hand is working to try to prevent the spread of this disease while caring for the children and their families in the outreach center. For these children, who often feel stigmatized because of their disease or association with the disease, they can find a place of compassion and care in the workers and volunteers at the outreach center.

Your donation, large or small, contributes greatly to our work in Belize City. With the money we fundraise we will pay our program fee to Hand in Hand, who will in turn buy all the building supplies necessary for the house we will build.  To build the home from start to finish costs $4500.  Our group is proud to be a part of this 14 year long legacy of service and partnership with Hand in Hand and we hope that you will join with us in this mission by your donations.

When I think of my time in Belize City, I do not know how to describe that experience, other than to say we found an “angel,” by building a home. We built the house for Angel (and her disabled husband Herman) and from her we witnessed compassion, determination, and faith. At the work site, people came from all over to help Angel, and we  knew that we were not just building a house, we were building a home - one that would be  full of love and community. We not only found Angel—our eyes were opened to what it means to give back to community. We were able to see a community center that cares for children and educates the public about their health. In Belize City, we found the angel in ourselves by opening our hearts and learning what it means to be part of a community that cares for everyone and strives to give back in a meaningful way.
